Share this article Share Emily Watson plays Yvonne, a something scientist and mother in a stagnating marriage, who embarks on an affair with a stranger Ben Chaplin. In the final scene last week, she was beaten and raped at an office party by a colleague called George Selway Steven Elder. She is supposed to be a highly respected, well-connected professional. She would surely expect the police to take her report very seriously. Perhaps Yvonne was in shock, you might say. But a week later she was insisting that her rapist must never be prosecuted because that would besmirch her own legacy as a scientist. Her name would be dragged through the mud. What irresponsible nonsense for the BBC to peddle.

She unknowingly married her ex-boyfriend Zack Johnson and it lasted for three years. That marriage was finally annulled in ” The Thanksgiving Decoupling “. As of ” The Gorilla Dissolution “, she and Leonard became engaged and were married at the start of season 9 in ” The Matrimonial Momentum “, followed by a re-wedding while still married at the start of season 10 in ” The Conjugal Conjecture “.
History[ edit ] A Techichi, likely the ancestor of Chihuahuas The Chihuahua’s history is convoluted, and there are many theories surrounding the origin of the breed. Both folklore and archaeological finds show that the breed originated in Mexico. The most common theory is that Chihuahuas are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. The earliest of these were found at Tres Zapotes in Veracruz, Mexico, which date to AD, indirect evidence that the breed was in Mexico over years before the first Europeans arrived.
It has been argued that these pots arrived with survivors from the Casas Grandes site in Chihuahua, Mexico , after it was attacked and destroyed around AD. Some historians believe this practice is where the idea of pain being transferred to animals from humans originated, which gave way to rituals such as burning the deceased with live dogs, such as the Techichi, to exonerate the deceased human’s sins.

When the volcano blew, sending ash more than 18 miles up, into the stratosphere, it blanketed the the island and darkened the sky. Across the Mediterranean, people saw the effects of the eruption at Thera, which was so large it changed the climate for a time. It was larger than Vesuvius, or Tambora, or Krakatoa. This catastrophic event, which spelled the end of Bronze Age Minoan civilization, may have cast a shadow over Mediterranean tales and myths for ages.
Excellent question with several answers. The “correct answer” depends upon who you ask: Period and place also matter. In the most general terms, vegetable is the broader term, encompassing all edible plant matter. Fruit is a subset of this larger group. In practice, definitions fall in two camps: Botanically speaking, tomatoes eggplants, cucumbers, melons, squash, peas, beans are fruits. Culinary applications reasonably argue these plants are vegetables.
We have to think there is some wisdom in that.

The Universal Law of Gravitation There is a popular story that Newton was sitting under an apple tree, an apple fell on his head, and he suddenly thought of the Universal Law of Gravitation. As in all such legends, this is almost certainly not true in its details, but the story contains elements of what actually happened. What Really Happened with the Apple?
Probably the more correct version of the story is that Newton, upon observing an apple fall from a tree, began to think along the following lines: The apple is accelerated, since its velocity changes from zero as it is hanging on the tree and moves toward the ground. Thus, by Newton’s 2nd Law there must be a force that acts on the apple to cause this acceleration.
Let’s call this force “gravity”, and the associated acceleration the “acceleration due to gravity”. Then imagine the apple tree is twice as high. Again, we expect the apple to be accelerated toward the ground, so this suggests that this force that we call gravity reaches to the top of the tallest apple tree. Then, the orbit of the Moon about the Earth could be a consequence of the gravitational force, because the acceleration due to gravity could change the velocity of the Moon in just such a way that it followed an orbit around the earth.
This can be illustrated with the thought experiment shown in the following figure. Suppose we fire a cannon horizontally from a high mountain; the projectile will eventually fall to earth, as indicated by the shortest trajectory in the figure, because of the gravitational force directed toward the center of the Earth and the associated acceleration.

Thick forests of the palms towering up to 80 feet and spreading for 7 miles covered the Jordan River valley from the Sea of Galilee in the north to the shores of the Dead Sea in the south. So valued was the tree that it became a recognized as a symbol of good fortune in Judea. It is chronicled in the Bible, Quran and ancient literature for its diverse powers, from an aphrodisiac to a contraceptive, and as a cure for a wide range of diseases including cancer, malaria and toothache.
Who was Sir Isaac Newton? He was a great scientist who discovered the gravitational pull and discovered three laws of motion. He studie…d at Trinity College, Cambridge. He is one of the most influential scientists of all time and is most famous for describing the laws of gravity, possibly after observing an apple falling from a tree.
In addition he described the three laws of motion which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural law. In the field of mathematics Newton shares the credit for the development of the differential and integral calculus. The greatest scientist of all time. He invented calculus, described refraction, explained gravity and described forces and motion.

Scientist, mathematician, and astronomer Born: January 4, in Woolsthorpe, England Died: Defining the three laws of motion and universal gravitation Isaac Newton by Godfrey Kneller Biography: Isaac Newton is considered one of the most important scientists in history. Even Albert Einstein said that Isaac Newton was the smartest person that ever lived.
During his lifetime Newton developed the theory of gravity, the laws of motion which became the basis for physics , a new type of mathematics called calculus, and made breakthroughs in the area of optics such as the reflecting telescope. His father, a farmer who was also named Isaac Newton, had died three months before his birth. His mother remarried when Isaac was three years old and left young Isaac in the care of his grandparents.
Isaac attended school where he was an adequate student. At one point his mother tried to take him out of school so he could help on the farm, but Isaac had no interest in becoming a farmer and was soon back at school. Isaac grew up mostly alone. For the rest of his life he would prefer to work and live alone focused on his writing and his studies. College and Career In , Isaac began to attend college at Cambridge.
Some people even believe the apple fell onto his head. Newton understood that what makes things like apples fall to the ground is a specific kind of force — the force we call gravity. Newton thought that gravity was the force of attraction between two objects, such as an apple and the earth.

Apparently, an apple fell on his head, and he started wondering why the apple was attracted to the ground in the first place. Newton publicized his Theory of Universal Gravitation in the s. It basically set forth the idea that gravity was a predictable force that acts on all matter in the universe, and is a function of both mass and distance. The theory states that each particle of matter attracts every other particle for instance, the particles of ” Earth ” and the particles of “you” with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
The standard formula for the law of gravitation goes [source: G has the value of 6. So if you put two 1-gram objects 1 centimeter apart from one another, they will attract each other with the force of 6. A dyne is equal to about 0. That’s why you’re not floating around in space right now. The force of gravity acting on an object is also that object’s weight.

A Brief History of Isaac Newton’s Apple Tree Growing in a courtyard garden in the Physics Department here in the University of York we have a grafted cutting from an ancient apple tree which still survives in Newton’s garden at Woolsthorpe Manor, his birthplace in Lincolnshire. This is the tree from which it is reputed that Newton saw an apple fall in the late summer of and which caused him to speculate upon the nature of gravitation. Our tree was given to us by Kew Gardens in The account of Isaac Newton’s discovering the principle of universal gravitation by observing the fall of an apple is very well known and usually dismissed as apocryphal.
However little can be further from the truth for Newton gave this account of his discovery to several acquaintances which include Voltaire French philosopher and essayist , John Conduitt his assistant at the Royal Mint Catherine Barton his niece William Stewkeley friend and antiquarian , Christopher Dawson a student at Cambridge amongst others. The first written account appears in notes on Newton’s life collected by John Conduitt in the year of Newton’s death.
It states that; he first thought of his system of gravitation which he hit upon by observing an apple fall from a tree , The incident occurring in the late summer of In other accounts it is stated that Newton was sitting in his garden at Woolsthorpe Manor near Grantham in Lincolnshire when the incident occurred. The tree is still remaining and is showed to strangers. His brother the, Rev. Charles Turnor, drew the accompanying picture of the tree in showing its position with respect to the manor house.
