Lisa Origliasso and Logan Huffman wed. Officiated by a “high priestess”, with readings of Hindi prayers and a marriage contract carved into oak by the groom himself, it was quite an unconventional affair. The pair got married over the first weekend of November at a Sunshine Coast property, Origliasso wearing a wedding dress created by Australian designer J’Aton Couture, which she told Vogue was inspired by both her “French and Italian ancestries” and the dress worn in by American actor Wallis Simpson at her wedding to the former King Edward VIII.
A few weeks on, Huffman has given fans a lot more detail about the ceremony, which he said in a lengthy Instagram post “embodied several spiritual practices we hold dear to our hearts. Joey Willis We’ll let him explain it: Wiruungga Dunggiirr from the Numba Gumbaynggiirr nation bestowed us with blessings and protection.

In total, there are more than ninety individual trees making up this memorial avenue, with all being bottle trees. The memorial cairn is located outside the Roma post office, being a white painted concrete pillar with a large chamfer on the top. This chamfered face displays a bronze plaque with the names of the 93 local men who lost their lives during the First World War. These names were originally located on plaques which were attached to each tree. The impetus for the Roma Heroes Avenue began with the Mayor of Roma, Alderman Miscamble who was influenced by similar memorial avenues he had seen in the other Australian states.
The bottle tree was then selected as it was a species that was commonly associated with the Roma area. It is believed that the first planting took place in to commemorate the death of a local soldier, Norman Saunders, who had been killed in France in Trees were then planted to commemorate subsequent deaths with the majority planted in two phases. Most trees however were planted by Only one of the original plaques, attached to each tree when planted, now survives.
However, despite these original plaques having been lost over the years, each tree still retains its particular association with a local soldier. Memorial trees, Wyndham Street, Roma, This image, dating from the late s shows the view along Wyndham Street, with the lines of memorial trees dominating the streetscape. As mentioned previously, the bottle tree was closely associated with the Roma area and the image below, dating from around , shows an old bottle tree in the former Roma Recreation Reserve.
This tree, based on its size, would have been very old when this photograph was taken and would, no doubt, have been a familiar feature in the area, making the choice of bottle trees for the memorial avenue, suitable and relevant.

A Brisbane man’s schizophrenia played no role in his decision to choke, punch and kick a Korean woman to death, a psychiatrist says. He has confessed to killing her but pleaded not guilty on the grounds his mental illness deprived him of the ability to control his actions. McEwan claims he was possessed by a demon named Jazzy when he attacked Ms Ban near her Roma St unit, dragged her body to nearby Wickham Park and dumped it under a tree. Treating psychiatrist Angela Voita has testified McEwan’s schizophrenia did not play a role “at all” in affecting his behaviour during the alleged offence.
She believes McEwan was “very intoxicated”, with the alcohol helping to bring out his violent tendencies. He said he could not remember waking up and leaving his home, but recounted not being able to stop himself Dr Voita said McEwan reported first seeing visions of a demon in the watch house after his arrest, contrary to his testimony that Jazzy was present since he was 11 or He told her he had exaggerated his symptoms and wanted his family to believe he killed Ms Ban due to mental illness rather than “evil”.

Rarely in the years before the First World War would you have found more than a few cars parked together. Vintage cars parked outside Firhall, in Wickham Terrace, ca. Alderman Jolly … said that the rapid development of the motor trade in Brisbane had handed over to the city of Brisbane the great problem of the parking of motor cars. Every big city in the world was faced with that problem. He felt sure that in Brisbane in the very near future they would have to take some action with a view to finding some better system of parking motor cars.
To-day their main streets were reduced to half their width owing to the lack of a parking system. Every large building that went up in the thickly populated parts of the city made matters worse. An important phase of the provision of car parking would be the selection of sites. They would have to be careful to see that such sites were properly situated.
